    Lan Perez: Slowing Down

After 18 years of putting her kids first, Mommy Lan is learning that slowing down and taking care of herself isn’t selfish. It’s sacred.

    Hi, Bagong Nanay.

I didn’t expect this day would come.

I used to drink Mother Nurture Coffee and Choco Mixes as a Bagong Nanay to my firstborn daughter. I loved it so much that, during the pandemic, I applied to become one of its resellers.

Kaya sobrang saya ko when I finally got chosen.

Selling Mother Nurture to new moms became one of the things that helped me stay sane and earn extra income during the pandemic.

That’s why I’m especially honored to share the Kuwentong Bagong Nanay of Mommy Lan Perez, the founder of Mother Nurture and a mom of three.

Mommy Lan recently shared that she was diagnosed with breast cancer. And when I found out, I knew I wanted to talk to her.

But I didn’t want this story to be just about cancer.

I wanted to know more about the mom behind a brand that helped so many of us through our breastfeeding journeys. I wanted to hear about her own motherhood journey, the things she learned along the way, and what she wants other moms to know now that she is going through a very different season in her life.

So when Mommy Lan messaged me last Tuesday and said she was free for a Zoom call, I was like, YES!

We met at around 3:30 p.m. on a Wednesday, and when she appeared on my screen, she was glowing.

I was so honored to have an hour with her, amid the Breastfeeding Awareness Month, and of course, I knew I had to share her story with you.

Here’s Mommy Lan’s Kuwentong Bagong Nanay.

“Lahat ng hindi ko naranasan [bilang anak], yun ang ginawa ko sa mga anak ko.”

    Lan Perez, mom of three

Before Mommy Lan became a mom, she already knew what kind of mother she wanted to be.

She grew up in a blended family, and her grandmother raised her. Her mom was often busy, so Mommy Lan became independent at a young age.

“Alam mo yung feeling na paggising mo, wala yung mommy mo?” she told me.

“Lumaki ako na medyo independent. Mas naging close ako sa mga helpers, kasi my mom was a businesswoman, at busy talaga siya.”

And because of that experience, she knew what she wanted to give her own children.

“Kaya when I became a mom, lahat ng hindi ko naranasan, yun ang ginawa ko sa mga anak ko.”

Mommy Lan and her husband Antoine now have three children, and she admits she’s an overprotective mom. She wanted to be as present as possible.

But just like all of us, she had her own doubts when she became a Bagong Nanay.

“Yung first child ko, I was so scared. Paano ko ba ‘to papalakihin? May capacity ba ako to be a mom? Yung maternal instinct ko ba sobrang lakas?”

Her eldest is now 18. And yes, she remembers that feeling all too well.

    From cloth diapers to breastfeeding

When she got pregnant with her second child in 2013, Mommy Lan started learning everything she could about motherhood.

“Mas marami kang kailangang aralin if you’re a first-time mom at that time.”

She learned about cloth diapering, babywearing, breastfeeding, and all the things that moms were getting into at the time.

Then came baby number three in 2018. By then, you would think she had motherhood figured out. But her third pregnancy was actually one of her hardest. She had experienced a miscarriage the year before.

“Dito ako nakaranas ng postpartum. I had a miscarriage the year before. Hindi ako nakapag-trabaho. Naka-bed rest ako for 12 weeks, at wala kaming helper.”

She wasn’t allowed to move around except to go to the bathroom, so she asked a neighbor to help supply their food. At work, she had to delegate.

“Patong-patong—I had a hard pregnancy, I delegated work stuff to my team, and yung transition, sobrang biglaan. They needed to step up, and as for me, I had to trust them.”

“I wish yung mga moms ngayon mas simplehan at ‘wag i-complicate ang breastfeeding. Mag-slow down sila, mag-eye to eye contact. ‘Yun ang sana hindi nila ma-miss out.”

    Lan Perez, mom of three

Her husband helped with chores after work, while her kids helped her, too. Then she had an emergency C-section. She had preeclampsia for the second time, her body reacted to the anesthesia, and she needed a blood transfusion. And then came another unexpected decision.

“Eto pa, Mommy Judy,” she told me. “Sinabay na ako i-ligate.”

They hadn’t planned on having a ligation because they weren’t expecting a C-section. At first, her husband didn’t agree. But eventually, they decided that the pros outweighed the cons.

“Eventually, napabuti rin pala na ni-ligate na ako.”

Her recovery was no joke. She remembers taking her first walk when they got home.

“Yung first walk ko, parang 10 steps lang, pero parang 10 minutes.”

And they still didn’t have a helper.

“I wanted to help myself recover. Yung mga kids ko, sila nag-help mag-change ng diapers ko. Tulungan din kami.”

After everything she had gone through, she couldn’t help but ask God:

“Bakit from pregnancy up to giving birth, ang hirap?”

But motherhood also taught her to trust other people. And by the time she became a mom of three, she says she had become a much more confident—and chill—mom.

“Hindi na ako OA. Ang rules lang namin noon, tatlo: Dapat well-fed, walang sugat, at maligo sila araw-araw.”

    At the forefront of breastfeeding

Her breastfeeding journey inspired a lot of moms. Mommy Lan wasn’t able to breastfeed her first child. So with her second child, she explored relactation. With her third, she breastfed until her child was eight years old.

Her breastfeeding journey inspired her to start Mother Nurture | Courtesy of Lan Perez

Over the years, she has seen breastfeeding change so much. And while she’s happy that moms today have more options and access to information, she also feels that sometimes, we make breastfeeding more complicated than it needs to be.

“Mas marami nang options ang mga moms ngayon. Nag-iba na talaga ang dynamics.”

She noticed how fast-paced breastfeeding has become—even how breastmilk is expected to look.

“Yung milk, mas aesthetic, dapat flat, walang bubbles.”

And this is what she wants moms to remember:

“I wish yung mga moms ngayon mas simplehan lang, ‘wag i-complicate ang mga bagay-bagay.”

She added, “Ang breastfeeding basta may dede at may baby, okay na. Mag-slow down sila, mag-eye to eye yung mom and baby. ‘Yun ang sana hindi nila ma-miss out.”

And I think this is something many of us Bagong Nanays can relate to. Time is fleeting and we should cherish and treasure these moments while we still can.

Then Mommy Lan was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Mommy Lan shared in detail how she found out about her cancer in her video, The Brave Mom.

She first noticed the lump in December, when she and her family went to Taiwan to celebrate her eldest child’s 18th birthday. She felt a sharp pain in her breast that eventually became a striking pain reaching her back.

She had her first checkup on December 26, 2025. In January, she found out that she had breast cancer.

“My diagnosis forced me to rest,” she told me.

And when she looked back at the year before her diagnosis, she realized just how exhausted she had been. Mommy Lan lives in a secluded area in Rizal, so whenever she went out, everything had to be planned.

“Yung mga anak ko, ang daming co-curricular activities. Wala talaga silang pahinga even on a Sunday. Our year was very competitive.”

Mommy Lan, a breast cancer warrior | Courtesy of Lan Perez

But she didn’t think much of her exhaustion.

“Hindi ko napansin, kasi masaya ako pag productive ako.”

Her friends noticed that she was tired, but she didn’t. Until her body told her to slow down.

    “Pwede pala na ako muna.”

For someone who loves to plan, being diagnosed with cancer meant that her entire schedule had to change.

“Nung na-diagnose ako, nagbago yung schedule ko. From football game to hospital check-up, or from meeting or collaboration with brands, surgery ang kapalit non.”

But her diagnosis also made her ask a bigger question:

Who am I aside from being a mom?

And honestly, she didn’t immediately know the answer.

“Eighty percent ng identity ko na-mold sa pagiging nanay dahil 18 years kong inuuna ang mga anak ko.”

    Then she realized:

“After my diagnosis, pwede pala na ako muna. Nung inuna ko yung sarili ko, hindi naman pala masama.”

“Hindi mo naman ni-neglect mga anak mo. Uunahin mo lang ang sarili mo kasi kailangan mo mag-heal.”

She wants moms to know that choosing yourself doesn’t mean you’re neglecting your children.

Her diagnosis changed how she sees motherhood

Mommy Lan even considers her diagnosis a gift. Not because she would ever wish for cancer, but because it forced her to really rest and slow down.

“May notion tayo na kapag nanay ka, kaya natin lahat. Motherhood is not only a blessing, it’s also a ministry. Kailangan mo talaga ng grace ni God. Hindi ko kakayanin kung ako lang mag-isa.”

    Lan Perez, mom of three

For years, she had been the one doing everything. But when she finally stepped back, her family stepped up.

“Since na-train mo naman yung mga anak mo, nabigay mo yung time mo, the intentionality was there.“

Then she said something that really struck me:

“When I decided to step back, nakita ko na nag-step up yung family ko.”

For 18 years, she had been planting. And now, she was seeing the fruit of all that intentional parenting.

“Ma, sige, daanan mo lang yan.”

One of the things Mommy Lan is most grateful for is how her children have responded to her illness.

As a business owner, she admits there were times when she was physically with her kids but not necessarily mentally present. Especially with her youngest, who is always curious and loves asking questions.

“Before, pag may ginagawa ako, the easiest answer, yun lang binibigay ko sa kanya. Ngayon, mas present ako with them—physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually, and psychologically.”

Her kids have also had to make adjustments. They paused some of their activities so they could give way to her recovery. And instead of complaining, they told her:

“It’s okay, Mom. We’ll come back when you’re fully recovered.”

The same children she spent years caring for are now telling her that it’s okay to take care of herself.

Mommy Lan has completed 16 cycles of chemotherapy and will be going through radiation next. She hopes to be in remission by next year.

Mommy Lan’s advice to Bagong Nanays: Take care of yourself.

When I asked Mommy Lan what she wanted to tell Bagong Nanays, she didn’t say we needed to become better moms. She said we need to become better at taking care of ourselves.

“You have to be intentional with your own body. ‘Wag mo siyang i-take for granted.”

She knows how difficult that is, especially when you’re a first-time mom.

“The puyat, the changes in your body, it’s really hard to do it. Kapag naka-adjust ka na around six months, kailangan mong mag-me time.”

She added, “It doesn’t have to be grand. Hindi kailangang magpa-spa or shopping. Just set a time for yourself and do the things that make you happy.”

For Mommy Lan, it’s coffee, journaling, and prayer time.

“Kung pwede, makapag-set ka ng 30 minutes for prayer time because motherhood is not only a blessing, it’s also a ministry. Kailangan mo talaga ng grace ni God. Hindi ko kakayanin kung ako lang mag-isa.”

Mommy Lan and her Mother Nurture team | Courtesy of Lan Perez

Even with Mother Nurture, there were moments when she wanted to give up.

“There were times that I wanted to close it down kasi ang hirap. Pero may mababasa akong testimonial ng nanay online, kaya tuloy pa rin.”

    Her advice?

“Devote time for yourself and for the Lord. Hindi ko kakayanin ito ng mag-isa.”

    And finally: REST.

Mommy Lan remembers feeling guilty whenever she took naps. She felt like she was missing out. But now, she sees rest differently.

Exercise. Quality sleep. Rest. These are not rewards for when you’ve finished everything. Because, let’s be honest, when you’re a mom, there will always be something left to do. So rest anyway.

And if you need permission to do it, let Mommy Lan give it to you.

“When you rest, pinapaubaya mo sa Kanya lahat eh.”

    Then she said:

“Rest is worshipping. ‘Wag kang matakot to rest, kasi hindi talaga tayo papabayaan ni Lord.”

Mommy Lan and her youngest child | Courtesy of Lan Perez

And maybe that’s the reminder we need today, Bagong Nanay.

We spend so much time making sure our babies are fed, our kids are okay, our husbands are okay, our homes are okay, and everyone has what they need.

But, how about you, Bagong Nanay? Kumain ka na ba? Ilang oras tulog mo? Have you done something just because it makes you happy? Because you matter, too.

And taking care of yourself doesn’t make you a selfish mom.

It makes you a mom who understands that she can slow down and deserves care, too.

So go ahead, Bagong Nanay. Buy your milk tea. Take the nap. Ask for help. Sit down in the toilet with the door closed for a while. Pray.

And don’t feel guilty about it. Because sometimes, the best thing you can do for your family is to take care of their Nanay, too. ♡

A Bagong Nanay’s Guide to Breastfeeding and Lactation Rooms in Metro Manila

    Hi, Bagong Nanays!

Whether you are planning to or currently breastfeeding your child, alam nating hindi siya madali. Kaya naman whatever would help a new mom navigate their breastfeeding journey helps a lot!

I stumbled upon a post on Threads of a Mommy Viktoria Melgo (@mvmlg), listing the lactation and breastfeeding areas she has found in Metro Manila malls (with photos!). With her permission, I compiled them in this article for easy reference for Bagong Nanays. I also included here the comments of moms who shared theirs as well.

    Lactation Rooms in Metro Manila

    Las Piñas

    📍SM Southmall

    2nd floor near Ace Hardware

Spacious for one momma. One at a time lang here, nasa loob ito ng mall clinic. Overall, it’s nice and comfortable, not too cold just enough para hindi pagpawisan. The only con is not allowed ang pag-change ng diaper here, but there’s a diaper changing area in the comfort room across.

    Makati

    📍Powerplant Mall

You have privacy with accordion doors, you can change your baby’s nappy sa cubicle mismo. And pinakaimportant is malamig!! And may bantay na lady guard outside. Ayoko sa lahat yung cramped na lactation room tapos pawis pa kayo ni baby huhu Contributed by @honaluli (no photo)

    📍Rustans (inside Glorietta)

    3rd level

Need I say more? Lactation room ba to o nursery na? 😂 One mom at a time lang since isa lang yung door na pwede ma-lock.

    📍SM Makati

4th level, SM Store near Women’s Intimates area

Very comfortable here. It has two booths and a common changing area with a sink. I like na yung two booths are different (yung isa maliwanag, yung isa dim kasi walang ilaw).

    Mandaluyong City

    📍Shangri-La Plaza

Pros: Malamig, comfy LazyBoy chair, my baby fell asleep while feeding because of the comfy chair and throw pillows, and nice lighting too. There’s a sink, microwave, and changing area also.

Cons: No separate areas for each mom, you’re all in one common room that’s why dads are not allowed inside. Contributed by @nicooolesantos

    Muntinlupa

    📍Festival Mall

Basement level, near Riverpark (below JCo)

It is also nice here! There are three booths with accordion doors so may privacy and may common changing area outside with a sink and a fridge.

Cons here are no companions allowed, and mahina ang signal for both Smart and Globe users.

    📍Rustans, Alabang Town Center

    Baby section, near cashier

Spacious! One mommy at a time lang. It’s nice and cozy here.

    Paranaque

    📍Landmark, Ayala Malls Manila Bay

    Grocery level near Food Court

No privacy! See the glass by the door? I had to put the chair ng nakatalikod para lang di ako kita ng mga nasa labas. Also, the mobile data signal is bad here.

    📍 Ayala Malls Manila Bay

Outside the mall 🥵 Exit near McDonald’s then turn right, nasa dulo (yes, nasa labas ng mall, tapat ng mga PUV)

The room itself is nice, it has two booths. Yung nasa pic is what each booth looks like. Companions are allowed din. Only con is nasa labas siya ng mall. 🤪

    Pasay

    📍Ikea

3rd level, near entrance of showrooms

I also like it here! The only cons is medyo mainit sa loob so might be helpful to bring a fan para comfy kayo ni baby. Pwede din ang companion sa loob.

    📍Okada

    In between Jollibee and Starbucks

I super love it here! Super comfy and pwede mag sleep si baby since tahimik, plus pwede si hubby pumasok sa loob!

    📍SM Mall of Asia

    3rd level, near Mary Grace

I love this. Super spacious, madaming pwede i-accommodate na moms, plus may footrest! Omg, naka tulog si baby here for an hour since walang light sa loob ng booth.

Cons here is mahina signal both Smart and Globe, and hindi rin pwede ang companion sa loob.

    📍S Maison

    Near Coffee Bean

One lactation room area only and no diaper-changing area here. Cozy naman ang ambiance. The only con here is although may glass door, may curtain naman for added privacy.

    Pasig City

    📍 Estancia Mall

Private room and may changing station sa loob. Pwede companion pero mainit ang temperature. Very spacious. Contributed by @4rm_atoz (no photo)

    📍SM Megamall

    3rd level, SM Store

Cool temperature. Bawal ang companion. May changing stations and hot water are a plus. Contributed by @4rm_atoz

    Quezon City

    📍 SM Fairview

Isang room, may three cubicles with a single couch each. @lyneliciousss (no photo)

    📍Trinoma

Six years ago, ‘yung breastfeeding station nila ay nasa loob ng Member’s Lounge. Ngayon, sineperate na nila. This is located sa 3rd floor (ata, hindi ko masyado maalala, basta sa tabi ng Fully Booked!)
Ang lungkot nito compared to what they had before. Allowed ang two moms sa loob, but in my case, I had to wait for the first mom, kasi kasama yung dad sa loob, and jampacked sila with a stroller pa. Contributed by @_tubillokat

    San Juan

    📍Greenhills Mall

    5th level

Really nice here. Many changing stations and breastfeeding booths. Booths can be a little warm so bring a fan! There’s a play area and a lounge (which can be crowded in the afternoon). Overall, the entire place is kinda warm. I think they made it like this para hindi tambayan since wala bantay dito. Companions are allowed here, too!

    Taguig

    📍Mitsukoshi Mall

Wala akong picture but super ganda doon! Hahaha. May CR sa loob para sa family. May parking area ng mga stroller. Three ung private rooms. Contributed by @zandragonslayer (no photo)

    📍One Bonifacio High Street

    Upper Ground, near Cole Haan

With fee, but naalala ko hindi naman super mahal. With 2 lactation booths and common changing area with sink. They call it a Family Lounge, and yes, very spacious and multiple families can tambay/rest at the same time. With small play area and madaming cubicle for both male & female restrooms. Very comfy mag rest here nakatulog si hubs! 😆 Contributed by @leysvelasquez

    📍SM Aura

    4th floor beside Fully Booked

There are three breastfeeding booths that have comfy chairs and a side table each. Only one changing station (no pad, just plain countertop), so there might be waiting time, which is okay lang kasi may couch naman na pwede paghintayan.

Another con besides the one changing station is that there’s a 40-minute time limit for each mom. May attendant to check, which I don’t think is a con naman since it’s enough time naman yun for one feed and nap ni baby.

  • Jaahzel Jadulco-Alvendia: Faith Over Fear

    Jaahzel Jadulco-Alvendia: Faith Over Fear

    Hi, Bagong Nanay!

As Mother’s Month comes to a close, I wanted to honor the strength of this Bagong Nanay who became a mom at 23 years old. She was a graduating student, working on her thesis, when she found out that she was three months pregnant with her first child. Not to romanticize becoming a young mother, but to honor the strength it took to navigate motherhood so early in life.

It was during the Bagong Nanay Milktea Meetup at the North when I got to know the story of Jaahzel Jadulco-Alvendia or Mommy Jazz, and I knew then and there that I had to share her inspiring story about faith, courage, and love. Her baby, Reeses Kiara, was diagnosed with a congenital heart disease at two months old, and underwent open heart surgery at barely five months old.

Mommy Jazz shared her story with me over Zoom, and I’m honored to share with you her Kuwentong Bagong Nanay. Read on.

    Kuwentong Bagong Nanay: Jazz Alvendia

Her motherhood journey started with a terrible headache.

Jazz was 23 years old then, on her last semester in college, busy with their thesis. She had no idea she was pregnant because she was drowning in acads and also had polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). She commuted from Quezon City to Morayta in Manila to go to school every day.

“Akala ko normal lang kasi mahihiluhin ako sa biyahe, may thesis pa kami nung time na yun kaya stressed din ako sa school. Until one night, iba na yung sakit ng ulo ko tapos gusto na ako ipa-CT scan ng mother ko, buti nalang hindi natuloy. Before ako i-CT scan, pinregnancy test ako, tapos doon nalaman.”

Because of a terrible headache, Jazz confirmed she was pregnant with her first child.

She then had a transvaginal ultrasound, and it confirmed that she was going to have a baby. “Nung na-transvaginal ultrasound ako, nakita na buo na siya, may heartbeat, may kamay na, gumagalaw-galaw na rin siya, tapos nasilip na rin ng doktor na baka girl ito!”

“Hanggang sa nanganak ako, sobrang smooth lang ng journey namin. Dinala ako sa ospital ng 7 AM, tapos 7 cm na pala ako, unmedicated birth yun, tapos ang bilis lang ng labor. 9 AM, baby out na. One hour mahigit lang ako nag-labor. Parang hindi iyon yung pain na in-expect ko. Parang di niya ako pinahirapan. Tapos okay din siya.”

Jazz became a Bagong Nanay at 24.

They thought everything was okay until they had to go to another pediatrician for Reese’s routine checkup when she was two months old.

“Nagulat ako kasi pag nagwe-well baby checkup, laging normal naman.

They went to a hospital where they know a pedia-cardiologist first, and scans confirmed that Baby Reese had a ventricular septal defect (VSD), or a hole in her heart. Her family and doctors initially hoped the hole would close on its own.

“After two months, iniscan ulit, nag-twice na yung size nung buttas. By October, gusto na nila ma-operahan si Reese. Lalaki na daw yung butas at magmamanifest na daw yung symptoms in a few months.”

Their first step was to get Reese baptized by September. They asked to extend for another month to save up for the hospital costs, which amounted to P800,000.

Jazz shared that after Reese was baptized, blessings poured to their family.

“Madaming gustong tumulong. May mayor sa Pangasinan na mother din siya, bumili siya ng plushies ni Reese tapos tinransfer nila agad yung pera. Kahit andyan na yung lahat ng sign, ready na kami, ayoko pa ituloy. Yung decision ko, di pa consistent,” Jazz recounts.

Reese’s surgery was finally scheduled to November 4.

“Ang gulo ng isip ko nun. Yung husband ko yung nagpupush na gawin kung ano yung makakabuti kay Reese. November 2, na-admit na siya. November 4, na-operahan na siya. Sobrang smooth lang.”

“The night before, nandun na yung mga waiver, mas lalo ako kinabahan kasi pwede daw magkaproblema sa nervous system, ma-paralyze or magka-infection. Lahat ng possibilities. Sila yung pinaka at risk, pero at the same time, sila din yung pinakamagandang operahan kasi yung puso nila bago pa, if ever may mga adjustment, mabilis silang maka-cope up.”

She spoke to Reese’s pedia-cardio, who said there’s a 94% success rate with her condition.

“Binago ni Reese yung buhay namin in so many ways.

Strong baby! Reese underwent an open heart surgery at 5 months old.

10 AM palang tapos na. Ang bilis. Lumabas yung surgeon, all good na.

While Reese had a successful operation, things took a turn when she had a fever.

“Nagkaroon siya ng sepsis, nilagnat siya bigla. Ang taas ng bacteria na nakita sa blood niya.”

They spent about 20 more days in the hospital.

“Nagtatanong ako, bakit hindi siya nagrerespond? Bakit hindi siya nagsasmile? Sobrang dami rin niyang antibiotic.”

Reese’s doctor assured her that they were doing their best.

They celebrated Reese’s 6th month at the hospital.

    Happy 1st birthday, Reese!

Reese celebrated her first birthday on May 16, and Jazz shared her Bagong Nanay story three days after.

Three things Jazz learned about a mother’s love and a child’s strength

    A mother’s love is limitless

“It’s okay to ask for help sa ibang tao, hindi siya pagiging weak o what, kakailanganin mo talaga ng tulong. Hindi mo kakayanin ng mag-isa ka lang.”

    – Mommy Jazz Alvendia

    Faith over fear

“Binago ni Reese yung buhay namin in so many ways. Mas lumakas yung faith namin. ‘Yun rin siguro yung way ni Lord para mapalapit kami sa Kanya. Naging faith over fear ako noon, kasi wala naman akong ibang paghuhugutan ng lakas or sasandalan. Talagang kumapit nalang ako sa Kanya, nagtiwala ako sa Kanya, kung ano yung plans Niya para sa amin. Kami rin ni MJ mas tumibay kami kasi every time mag-aaway kami, naaalala ko, meron kaming mas malaking laban na dapat harapin.”

Babies are braver than we think

“Ang galing ng babies. Yung ine-expect natin, na pag babies delicate sila, nakita ko yung version ni Reese na sobrang lakas niya. Madaming nagsasabi wag namin ipa-opera. Pero nagtiwala rin kami sa science, sa mga doktor, at kay Reese.”

Jazz’s message to her Bagong Nanay self

“Nakaka-proud ka. Noong time na nalaman ko na pregnant ako, one sem nalang sana tapos OJT. Tapos sa US sana ako mag-OJT kasi andun yung mother ko. Parang nirepurpose ako. Ngayon na-realize ko para dito siguro pala talaga ako, para maging mother. Makikita mo palang yung best version ng sarili mo.

The Alvendias. Photo by Baby and Company Photography

“Hindi ko inakala na ganyan ka pala ka-strong. Kasi young mom, tapos five months postpartum palang din naman ako noon, sabi ko, di pa nga nag-si-sink in sa akin na mother na ako dahil ang bilis din ng pregnancy journey ko. Sobrang proud ako sa kanya, na-overcome niya lahat, may mas better version pa pala ako. Hindi lang pala ako anak, hindi lang pala ako yung magaling na classmate, or girlfriend, magiging magaling ka rin pala na mother.”

    An advice she holds deeply

There’s one advice that Jazz received when she was a Bagong Nanay that she will forever cherish, “Nung nalaman na namin na may heart condition si Reese, may nagsabi sa akin na parang “There’s always a light at the end of the tunnel.”

‘Yun yung talagang ni-look forward ko, matatapos din to, kahit ang bagal ng oras pag may problema ka, parang kailan ba ‘to matatapos, malalagpasan ba namin to? Pinanghawakan ko talaga na after nito, ginhawa naman. Pagsubok lang to.

3 things a Bagong Nanay needs to thrive in motherhood

“Every mom needs a village talaga.”

Jazz believes that what helped her get through the hardest parts of her motherhood journey was her support system.

“Kakailanganin mo talaga ng tulong, kahit anong pride mo. Nung mag-jowa palang kami, ang taas ng pride namin eh. Bata pa kasi kami, kaya ma-pride kami. Sabi namin, ‘Wag tayo magpost, wag tayo humingi ng tulong,’ pero kinailangan namin. It’s okay to ask for help sa ibang tao, hindi siya pagiging weak o what, kakailanganin mo talaga ng tulong.”

For Bagong Nanays, she emphasizes, “Pwedeng family mo yun, or kung hindi ka comfortable sa family mo, maghanap ka ng isang friend, kahit isang friend lang, o kung wala talaga, pwedeng husband mo, o kung wala din, sa sisters mo. Kailangan mo talaga ng village.”

    Mama Jazz and her family.

Throughout her pregnancy, Jazz said she had been calling the shots as a mother.

With all they went through, Jazz always points to God. “Kahit anong problema, kapag wala ka nang mapuntahan o mahingan ng tulong, Siya lang yung nandiyan para makinig sayo. Sa Kanya ka lang kakapit.”

“Hindi rin ako makapaniwala na naging ganun ka-strong yung faith ko sa Kanya, kasi kung hindi, baka hindi naoperahan si Reese kung nagtiwala lang ako sa sarili ko.”

What makes Jazz happy as a mom

Jazz has been sharing her motherhood as a content creator, sharing daily vlogs, product reviews, and more on her social. When asked what makes her happy, she says it’s being part of a community.

“Sobrang saya ko na nakakaattend ako ng meet-ups kasi nagkakaroon ako ng time para sa sarili ko. Ang saya kapag may kasama kang mom friends kasi sila yung nakakarelate. Masaya ako ngayon sa mom friends ko, mommy gatherings, mommy meetups. Masaya ako na naging part ako ng Bagong Nanay Community. Na-meet ko si Mama Frances, siya yung naging way para maging member ako ng Bagong Nanay noong HiPP Mommy Meetup.”

She adds, as a young mom, being part of a support group helps her to feel less alone in her journey.

“Mas hindi na ako intimidated ngayon kasi alam kong may Bagong Nanay Community na papansin sa akin, makikipag-usap sa akin, at magaaya sa akin mag-milk tea.”

  • ‘Holding Both’ is a book for Bagong Nanays

‘Holding Both’ is a book for Bagong Nanays

    Hi, Bagong Nanay!

Kumusta? Just a quick life update, I just got hired last January 14, and it’s a remote job that I prayed for. As you know, I resigned from my previous job to be a full-time Bagong Nanay again. I know, God gave me this job – fully remote, flexible, and same timezone lang because it’s Hong Kong-based. (Chat nalang tayo for more deets).

Anyway, I mentioned that because as a millennial mom, sobrang taas ng guilt level ko kapag nahahati yung oras ko as an employee and as a mom. Parang it’s either – mag-resign ako and be a full-time mom, or mag-work ako but always think about resigning every day. Kayo din ba?

Holding Both by Chesca Susmerano Review

Kaya when I read this book, Holding Both, written by Chesca Susmerano, founder of Studio Maria and a good friend, I was affirmed that it’s valid to feel both of these feelings. Yung guilt pati yung joy, yung longing na mag-work pero ma-enjoy din yung tambay lang sa bahay with kids. Reading the first few pages of the book, I had to stop and take a screenshot, cry, and message Chesca how I felt so seen and so understood just by reading. Lalo na when I read this line:

“You’re allowed to drop some things but not forever.”

Talagang, iyak malaley sa bed. Reading that line, carefully and thoughtfully written by Chesca, sabi ko, grabe yung feelings ko of guilt for not working, wala akong contribution sa bahay financially, wala akong pambili ng mga gamit na gusto ko for myself, pero this is not forever. Ang bilis lang niya actually. And mas naiyak ako sa part na, being with our young children na lagi nating kabunong-braso pag babalik ka na sa laptop mo or aalis ka going to office, is also not forever.

An easy read, unputdownable for moms

So I continued reading the book. 63 pages lang siya. Actually, it was meant to be read one chapter at a time. Buti nalang, Chesca made it an e-book, sobrang convenient basahin ng mommies whenever and wherever.

Tapos napa-stop na naman ako dito sa page where Chesca talked about the sacrifices she did as a mother, being the career woman she used to be before being a Bagong Nanay. If you also resigned from your job to be a full-time mom, grabe yung page 17, I’m telling you. I’m not going to spoil because you have to read it on your own.

Then sa page 20, yung affirmation ni Chesca that whatever we are doing for our children, no matter how small or mundane, matters, wala na. I lost it. Seriously, Holding Both is unputdownable. Hooked na hooked ako.

An affordable, necessary gift for moms

Reading my screenshots of the book now, I’m getting goosebumps. Meron pa akong isang page na twice ko iniscreenshot because it’s so good. Yes, instead of a book na i-Stabilo para maalala, sa e-book you can screenshot so you can always remember. You will always be reminded. Kasi as moms, need natin ng daily reminder that we are doing okay. That we will be okay. That we are enough.

That’s why I encourage you to buy the book, and read it for yourself, or gift it to another Bagong Nanay, may occasion man o wala. I know, 6 years na ako as a nanay, and I thought I know it all – yang mental health, self-care, guilt – akala ko gets ko na yan. Not until I read Holding Both, para akong na-refresh as a mom. Parang na-encourage ako to be myself, to not hide, to not play small anymore. And I hope all of us moms realize this too. That we are doing sacred work as a mom, and we didn’t become less of a person when we gave up our jobs and became a mother.

My honest review of Holding Both, hehe.

Milk Tea Confessions: Conversation Cards review

And it’s important to have a village. If there’s one thing I will always remember when I sought professional help, it’s that moms need a strong support system. Minsan, sapat na yung may chatgroup ka of four moms who are in the same season as you. Yung pwede mo makausap about faith, about rage, about anything.

I’m happy that we are growing our Bagong Nanay Viber community (ask me for the link). Mommy Charlotte Silva and I started this group way back pandemic era, nung uso yung group chats at pa-Lalamove ng mga stuff. Now, with Bagong Nanay group getting bigger, we get to hold meetups na din.

Last January, we held our first Bagong Nanay Milktea Meetup in Molito, Alabang. Ang saya, hindi pa kami maka-move on. Pito lang kaming moms na nagmeet, pero it was enough. We were meant to be there, all 7 of us. And during our meetup, we used Chesca’s Milk Tea Confessions: Conversation Cards! It’s a freebie when you buy the Holding Both book through her website.

If you are a mom and you’re going to meet up with your mom friends and you want to make the most of your very limited time, use the Milk Tea Confessions: Conversation Cards para hindi naman puro chismisan or “Anong diaper gamit niyo?” ang topic. Makabuluhan naman sana, please.

What Bagong Nanays say about the Milk Tea Confessions: Conversation Cards

Bagong Nanay Milktea Meetup @ The South!

Here’s what the Bagong Nanay mamas said about their experience using the Milk Tea Confessions: Conversation Cards during our meetup.

“I sometimes feel awkward initiating conversations with new people but the Confession Cards served as an effective icebreaker! I like that I get to really know the moms using the reflective questions and relatable prompts that were provided. It’s interactive, and thought-provoking. It helped us connect genuinely throughout the whole Milk Tea Meetup.” –Mommy Camille Chua

“It gently opened the door to the kind of heartful conversations we don’t always get to have in everyday mom life. It wasn’t just small talk—it was real stories, shared emotions, and that comforting feeling of “me too.” So grateful for the space it created.” -Mommy Kyla Magbag

“The idea is so clever and the experience of bringing these conversation cards to the table (with the right circle) is surely refreshing!

I think it’s a must-have for every mom meetups. My momma heart is happy. Ang saya to bring back the beautiful art of conversation while sharing a fave drink during gatherings, than just randomly checking stuff on our phones.

Sana soon meron ding family conversation cards and kids convo cardsss.” -Mommy Cess Arnaiz

  • Joolz Aer2 Stroller Review: Is It Worth the Investment?

Joolz Aer2 Stroller Review: Is It Worth the Investment?

This review is based on our personal experience.

    Hi, Bagong Nanay!

We just got home from our 15-day trip to Guam, USA, our first out-of-the-country trip as a family of four. One of our travel essentials was a stroller – alam ko kasing we’ll be going to do a lot of walking and shopping so it’s a must-have!

We brought with us the Joolz Aer2 Lightweight Stroller in Sandy Taupe, currently priced at P33,999. It was named the best travel stroller by Forbes in 2025, so the question is, in this economy, worth it ba talaga?

    Here’s our honest review.

Bagong Nanay Reviews: Joolz Aer2 Lightweight Stroller in Sandy Taupe

    Specs:

    Weight: 6.5kg or 14.3lbs

    When folded: 17.3 x 20.8 x 9.2 inches

    Weight limit: 22.7kg or 50lbs

    One-hand, one-second easy fold

As Bagong Nanays, marami tayong na-unlock na skills na kaya nating gawin with one hand. Habang buhat si baby, kayang abutin ang remote, kayang magluto, and many more. Kaya perfect yung Joolz Aer2 because it can fold with one hand. Yes! Bukod sa it can fold with one hand, it stands once it is folded.

    Five-point harness

Nung nasa Smart Parenting pa ako, I was able to interview a pediatrician about what parents should look for before buying a stroller. Dr. Joey Cuayo-Estanislao mentioned two things: the stroller should have an effective braking system and a five-point harness.

Joolz Aer2 has this, kaya talagang sold ako. Why? Pero yung five-point harness also secured the child’s shoulders, kaya malaking bagay siya especially during sudden stops. Dun palang check na si Joolz Aer2.

    Compact as a carry-on

Since it was our first trip abroad, nakita namin kung paano ang kalakaran when you bring a stroller on the plane. In our experience with Philippine Airlines, you may use the stroller up to the boarding gate, then leave it with the staff so they can check it in. Although with the Joolz Aer2, since sobrang compact niya when folded and comes with a handy drawstring bag, we brought it to the plane and placed it in our overhead cabin para hindi siya ma-damage along with the other baggages.

    Perfect for naps

Moms of toddlers would know (lalo na boys) na nap times are sacred. Kaya we loved how spacious the Joolz Aer2 was when my son napped. It has a lie-flat recline kaya talagang relaxed si baby. Yun talaga ang pakay namin for the stroller kasi it’s hard to go around na buhat-buhat palagi lalo pag pagod na.

At pag gising na siya and bored na sa stroller, sobrang spacious ng Joolz to carry your other items (even your other child!). It also has a big basket for more stuff, like diaper bag, tumbler, etc.

    Easy to maneuver

Walang problem kaming na-encounter when steering the stroller even in tight spaces (like store aisles). Smooth lang ang ride just as how it should be.

Plus points that the Sandy Taupe color is so aesthetic, it’s really a headturner sa ibang parents. I also saw other parents at the airport with their Joolz strollers, so proven and tested talaga na it’s a travel must-have!

Real-talk: Not the easiest to clean

Before using the stroller, we had to have it cleaned kasi it came from storage. While there are available stroller cleaners that I found around the metro (Urban Essentials in Quezon City and Domestic Diva in BF Homes Almanza), it costs around Php 950-2000. So my husband removed the fabrics and we cleaned it on our own. Medyo nahirapan siya to reassemble but we found a helpful video online specifically for Joolz Aer2.

But if you bought a new one, just wipe it clean!

    The verdict

So is the Joolz Aer2 worth its price?

Yes, given the safety, comfort, and peace it gives, it’s worth it. Especially if you plan on traveling a lot with your child, it’s a must-have. As a mom who also purchased a Doona car seat and stroller in one, I must say, investment siya. Iba talaga ang quality ng Joolz over other strollers na trendy lang and flimsy.

However, I recommend that you let professional cleaners do the deep cleaning as necessary kasi nga medyo tricky i-remove and ibalik yung fabrics. Spare yourself from the headache, you might do that once or twice a year siguro at most!

Overall, it’s a Bagong Nanay-approved stroller. I hope we could travel again soon and bring the Joolz Aer2 with us. Ang dami na naming core memories together, and I can’t wait to make some more.

Thank you so much, Joolz PH!

  • Baby’s Starting Solids? Here’s A Panimulang Meal Plan + Tools

Baby’s Starting Solids? Here’s A Panimulang Meal Plan + Tools

    Hi, Bagong Nanay!

Kumusta? Ako, eto, 36 years old na. Haha! Gusto ko lang maging mas active magsulat because madami tayong time at madami tayong responsibilities as a Bagong Nanay who’s given another lease in life.

So I’m writing this (while listening to the Dogshow Divas podcast ha) because kahapon, may nagtanong na first-time mom sa ating Bagong Nanay Viber Community about her 6-month-old na magsstart na mag-solids.

I remember when I was in her shoes, half-excited and half-kabado ako noon nung magsastart na kumain ang aking firstborn. Pero I became more confident when a mama friend (who also shared breastmilk to me when I gave birth to my preemie baby) shared this panimulang meal plan with me.

I’ve shared this with a lot of moms in my six years as a mother, and so far, okay naman yung mga anak nila!

Because sharing is caring, I’m sharing it here too!

Sample Meal Plan for 6-months-old Baby

    Some notes to remember:

    • I followed this for my two kids. Ang principle behind this is you offer the same food for three days para makita kung may allergies sila sa certain food. Kasi kung meron, inform your pedia agad. It also helps to really track what your child eats, kahit using pen and paper or Google Sheets, you do you. I also take photos of the food bago kumain si baby, for reference. Haha.
    Squash puree!
    • About the water, we used distilled water only until our baby turns one.

How to prepare your baby’s first solids

    Cooking

    • When it comes to food preparation, two ways worked for me:
      • For my first child: I dedicated an own pot for my baby’s food. Boil tapos mash using a fork. You may add breastmilk din, lalo na sa first food like avocado.
      • For my second child: I received a hand-me-down Boboduck 4-in-1 food blender kaya mas madali magprepare ng food daily. Steam and mash in one na ito!
NANAYS! I’m passing this on to another Bagong Nanay who needs this! Message me if you want it. Just shoulder the SF please.

    Storage

Pag naparami yung naluto ko, I put the excess in this food containers from Oxo Tot. Tapos isasapaw ko nalang sa sinaing the next day!

Buy this Oxo Tot Baby Blocks Freezer Storage Containers – 2 oz here

    Utensils

Madaming bowls and utensils that you can shop from Tickled Babies, so just choose what you need. You can also join our Viber group to ask moms what they used! Just comment below or DM me on Instagram to get the link!

    High chair

I swear by Ikea Antilop high chair dahil ang dali linisin and stable siya. I bought ours way back in 2020 pa, from pasabuy sellers. Wala pa kasing Ikea noon but now meron na, easy to buy na so go!

Ikea Antilop high chair. Need lang bilhan ng foot rest, madami daw sa Shopee but I got mine from Bears & Berries Manila on Instagram.

Starting solids is exciting, yes, pero may struggles din! But we’re all in this together, and you’ll be okay.

Moms Share: Sino Ka Bago Maging Bagong Nanay?

    Hi, Bagong Nanay!

Kumusta? October na, napakabilis ng panahon. Birth month ko na, at syempre, more than ever, I celebrate that I’m still here.

I asked the Bagong Nanay Community to take a moment to reflect on who they were bago sila naging Bagong Nanay. Life before motherhood ba.

Read on, and share us a part of your story too!

    Banking

“I used to lead a group of officers and staff in an international bank handling operations and customer service for eight years and before that used to work in a TV network. It was my lifelong dream to be a journalist.” Love Cosio

    Recruitment

“Before I became an AUsome Mom, I was in the field of recruitment, offshore recruitment to be exact I supported APAC & US clients for industries like banking, finance, insurance, IT & healthcare. This was pre-pandemic and every after work, I always chose to walk instead of riding a jeepney or Angkas to Park Square Glorietta where I’d take a van going home. Walking is therapeutic for me, it’s like my 10-minute me-time every day where I just clear my thoughts.

I stopped working for a while to focus on my AUsome son. It was really challenging, but it was worth it. Recently, I’m back in the industry, starting again, but, it honestly feels good.” Pearl Marie Cordura

    HR Manager

“I used to dream of becoming an HR Manager back in 2013. I told myself that one day, that’s the position I wanted. Little did I know, God granted that dream in 2018—something I never expected. I was always traveling for work, and I truly loved my job. One of the most touching moments was when the CEO himself told me that if I ever wanted to come back, the company doors would always be open for me. I was one of their pioneer employees, and he said I had greatly contributed to the company’s beginnings. Today, I’m so proud because that company has now grown into one of the leading courier services nationwide.” Charmeyn

    Mission work

“I used to be a full-time lay missionary, along with my husband. After getting married, we served together on mission in East Timor for 5 years – that’s where our first two kids were born. I have always loved writing / communicating, and wanted to take up writing in college but took what was supposedly a pre-Med course instead (for the love of my parents).

So I studied PT in college, took and passed the boards, but practiced PT only for a few months before answering His call to go fulltime in the mission field. Fast forward to the present, and now my work (and advocacies) are very focused on communication. God always has a way of making things work out for us, noh? Tina Santiago Rodriguez

“I remember that I was going almost block by block, business to business when I was a fresh grad. I was offering graphic design services with limited work experience and only a college portfolio. As in ginapang ko magkapangalan lang ako sa larangang ito, lalo na sa Baguio. It did came, yung chance na makilala. Na pag kailangan ng graphic artist sa Baguio, ako yung nirerefer. Grabe yung passion ko noon. Also built my own business after a few years and did so many rakets here and there. Now that I’m a mom, I had to slow down. My quick paced and di mapakali self had to chill. My child is teaching me to not rush life and enjoy the little things. She became my pahinga.” Gelli Mae Tan

Ikaw, Bagong Nanay? What’s your story?

Me, when I was 29, I used to be a workaholic comms girlie, yung tipong unang dumadating sa office tapos huling uuwi. Mahilig kami tumambay after work hours sa Sheridan, rant sa work at lovelife. I love mounting events, brainstorming, making things happen, and traveling to our partner communities. Siargao? Thrice a year ata ako nandun. I’ve been to a lot of place in Philippines, minsan kakalapag lang, aalis na. Ngayon, as a mom of two, ni hindi makapag-CR ng matiwasay! Hahaha.

Breastfeeding and Mental Health: Key Insights for Bagong Nanays

    Hi, Bagong Nanay!

Kumusta? Ako, okay lang naman. Malapit na mag-1 year old ang aking baby boy. Kaninang umaga, nag-declutter ako ng mga gamit niya–mga damit na pinagliitan at mga hand-me-downs from friends na ready na akong i-pass on to another Bagong Nanay. If you are interested in hand-me-down Bagong Nanay items, send me a message on the Bagong Nanay Viber group here.

Kahapon, August 6, nag-join ako sa isang online seminar about nurturing the mental health of breastfeeding mothers.

Source: Facebook /Philippine Society of Newborn Medicine

The Mother and Baby Dialogues Series 5 is spearheaded by the Philippine Society of Newborn Medicine, Inc. Council on Advocacy and Service Programs, Committee on Breastfeeding, in collaboration with Philippine Pediatric Society (PPS), Philippine Obstetrical and Gynecological Society (POGS), Perinatal Association of the Philippines, and Victoriano Luna General Hospital.

Takeaways from Breastfeeding and Mental Health Seminar

    1. Educate yourself.

Knowledge is power, ika nga.

Screenshot from Zoom /Mother and Baby Dialogues Series 5

    2. Communication is key.

Hinihikayat naman ni Dr. Abegail Joy Corro-De Pano na during the first postpartum check-up, kausapin nila ang kanilang doktor for any concerns about breastfeeding or latching. She reminds that it really takes a village to help a mom breastfeed.

“Communication is key. Dapat parehong magulang ay gustong mag-breastfeed,” sabi niya. Kuwento niya, kahit na mag-asawa silang doktor (OB-GYN ang kanyang misis), hindi pa rin naging madali sa kanila ang breastfeeding.

Para naman sa mga tatay, bilin ni Dr. Bucu, “Do whatever is possible to help your wife breastfeed – change diapers, household work, masahe, o kahit ano pa. Happy mommy, happy baby, magiging happy daddy.”

Diin ni Dr. Corro-De Pano, husbands really need someone to tell them what they need to do.

    3. Adopt a healthy lifestyle.

Studies show that breastfeeding decreases the risk of depression among new mothers.

“Commit to the journey. The benefits outweigh all the difficulties.” Dr. Rene Andrew Bucu

    4. Use social media as a force for good.

    Final words

Maigi raw na magpatuloy na magpadede up to 2 years and beyond. Huwag lang kalimutang alagaan ang sarili — our children deserve moms and dads who are healthy mentally and physically.

Strengthen the support system. Let’s raise the children and mother together. Tanggalin ang stigma, at huwag mahiyang mag-ask for help.

Dr. Bucu emphasizes, “Commit to the journey. The benefits outweigh all the difficulties.”

Kay Dr. Quiring naman, pinaalala niya na there’s no health without mental health. “No man is an island. We are here to help families and influence systems.”

    Hi, Bagong Nanay!

Kumusta? Ako, okay naman. As a full-time breastfeeding mom for 10 months now (total of almost five years), I’m always on the lookout for breastmilk boosters.

Nasubukan ko na ata most of the malunggay products in the market. Naging reseller din ako during the pandemic ng mga breastfeeding supplements. Haha. Studies also showed that malunggay helps increase breastmilk supply among mothers.

Kaya when I came across a mom’s post on Threads, saying, she and her husband made their own blend of malunggay drink for postpartum recovery and lactation, talagang nag-mental note ako na itatry ko ito. Plus, it is FDA-approved, so it’s a go.

Bagong Nanay Reviews: Cuddle and Coo Malunggay and Acai Berry Drink

So I spoke with Mommy Ara, the mom behind Cuddle and Coo Malunggay and Acai Berry Drink on Instagram. Kuwento niya, she and her friends came up with the formulation, and she’s very happy and proud of her product. Sila ni husband niya rin ang nagpapack ng orders and nagbebenta, so super inspiring!

I bought a sampler pack on her TikTok shop, and received it the next day. A sampler pack has two sachets, and it costs P60.

    Taste test

Tinry muna namin with cold water and ice, and it’s a treat.

“Lasang berry,” sabi ni Tatay. “It’s so yummy,” naman ang sabi ng aking 6-year-old. For me, masarap siya! Hindi mo agad malalasahan yung malunggay, which sometimes would come off as too herby or strong at aayawan ng iba.

Dito magkakaalaman, kasi first day ng aking menstrual period. According to doctors, may effect talaga ang period sa milk supply.

mug with cuddle and coo malunggay and acai berry juice
My padede mug with hot Cuddle and Coo Malunggay and Acai Berry Juice

Though I couldn’t prove na yung isang tasa ng malunggay juice ang nakatulong, I must say I wanted to try more para maprove ko na it really helps increase breastmilk supply.

    The verdict

For its price of P30 per serving, iisipin mo agad na medyo pricey siya compared sa competitors niya. Pero when you look at its active ingredients kasi, you’ll realize na sobrang sulit niya.

Aside from malunggay, it has marshmallow root (rich in antioxidants), fernblock (immune system support), milk thistle (prolactin like moringa), goji berry (fiber), collagen (skin elasticity), and L-glutathione (reduced oxidative stress). It’s sweetened by Stevia!

Dahil siksik sa nutrients with a very refreshing taste ang Cuddle and Coo Malunggay and Acai Berry Juice Drink, I highly recommend it to all Bagong Nanays!

Buy Cuddle and Coo Malunggay and Acai Berry Juice on TikTok or chat with them on Instagram.
